Back in college, did you ever say those words "I'm never going to use this stuff"? Or "how is this going to apply to my career"? Well, now I know! Every music education major has to take classes in band methods. This involves learning about every instrument and playing many of them in preparation to teach band. Back then I couldn't imagine ever teaching a band class, but here I am...teaching a middle school beginner band!
During the last two quarters I was teaching general music to the middle school students. We played some hand bells and sang choral music for the Christmas concert, but it was a very challenging time for me. Most public schools offer middle school music as an elective. Many of my students wanted nothing to do with music because they know that public schools wouldn't make them take the class. After much planning it was decided to take away general music and turn it into a band elective. This makes me very happy because I will have a class full of students who want to be there!

hey chuck,
your sounding alot like our old band director Mr Harrower, all I can say is that he would be proud of you. Although I'm not a band director I remember telling my father that 'd never be a plumber...now I am. It just makes you laugh when you're reminded statements you have made the past, and life ends up the contrary. By the way saw your dad in home depot today. Hope all is well, it great to here how God is continuing to use you and your talents.

Hey Lukas,
Thanks for commenting on my blog. Is Mr. Harrower still teaching band at Bethel? The last time I checked he was, but that was a few years ago. Do you have any children?
Well I'm not sure either if Mr Harrower is still there at the school. As far as kids go I have two kids and a third on the way. Life is pretty active. As you already know. Let's say that I'm to the point of looking into a soccer mom mini van! lukas
